Michigan Team secure USDOT contractCollaborative effort to test new road departure crash warning systems Pittsburgh, PA – October 31st, 2001 Visteon Corporation (NYSE: VC), in partnership with Assistware Technology and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), has secured a contract with the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to test a new road departure crash warning system. "In collaboration with Assistware and UMTRI, Visteon is pleased to be working with the USDOT on this initiative," said Tim Tiernan, Manager of Visteon's Collision Avoidance Technology Department. "Visteon is committed to supporting its customers, and that customer support goes beyond the automakers. We are working to help the USDOT prove-out collision avoidance technologies." The focus of this USDOT Intelligent Vehicle Initiative is on the two primary aspects of road departure crash prevention: road-drift warning, designed to warn the driver when the vehicle begins to unintentionally drift from the road; and curve speed warning, designed to warn the driver when the vehicle is traveling too fast for the upcoming curve. As part of this initiative, the three companies will provide and implement the warning system in a fleet of vehicles. AssistWare Technology, a leader in the development of advanced vehicle safety components, will provide the core lane-tracking and crash-warning algorithms for the field test. “We are pleased that SafeTRAC will be at the core of these next generation safety systems,” said Dr. Dean Pomerleau, Assistware’s CEO and founder. “This collaboration is an outstanding opportunity to develop technology that will ultimately save people’s lives.” UMTRI, a leader in designing and conducting field operational tests of driver assistance systems, will serve as the partnership lead, coordinating and conducting the system testing. "Our extensive testing of this system will support a scientific evaluation of its performance and benefits," said Robert Ervin, Head of UMTRI's Engineering Research Division. "Being able to warn the driver of road drift-off and curve over-speed hazards is hoped to play a key part in reducing the disproportionate toll of injuries and deaths claimed each year through road-departure crashes." As a leading systems integrator, Visteon will bring to the partnership overall system engineering, design and implementation of the road departure crash warning system.
