SafeTRAC Operation Q: Does the unit work on bad weather conditions? How do shadows, sunlight, rain, snow, etc. affect it? A: SafeTRAC has undergone millions of miles of road testing on a wide range of road types, weather and lighting conditions. Overall, we have found that the system is available over 90% of the time. It has special modes that allow it to not only track lane markings, but any subtle road feature such as the road edge and exhaust lines down the center of highway. It even has the ability to track with no lane markings at all! Since it is a vision-based system, it cannot track during situations where an operator typically cannot easily identify the road. For example, during a white-out snow storm, when there is excessive early morning glare, or nighttime rain when oncoming headlights and streetlight glare make the road hard to see. When it cannot reliably track the road, SafeTRAC provides an audible indication of this to the driver, and then temporarily suppresses warnings until the situation clears up.
Q: How accurate is the system? How many false alarms can I expect? A: Significant work has been done to minimize the number of false alarms, which can quickly turn a driver aid into a driver nuisance. SafeTRAC has been very well received by our users due to our low false alarm rate. During typical operation, we expect to see no more than one false alarm every few hours of driving. As one example, on a recent interstate trip of about 350 miles, the system was available 99.45% of the trip, and experienced no false positives and no false negatives.
Q: Can side-to-side sensitivity be adjusted? A: It is very easy to change the sensitivity of the system. Simply press the control knob and it will allow the user to change the ‘drift alert’ sensitivity. Setting range from: EARLIEST, EARLIER, EARLY, AT EDGE, LATE, LATER, LATEST, and NEVER. A later sensitivity setting will allow the vehicle to depart the lane further before triggering a warning.
Q: Can it record video? How long? A: If purchased with the black-box recording option, the system stores up to 10 sec of data prior to an accident. The recording function is triggered by an accelerometer, similar to those used to trigger an airbag.
Q: What is your warranty policy? A: All SafeTRAC units carry a one-year replacement warranty. In the unlikely event of a failure, simply contact us (dpatterson@assistware.com) and we will provide instructions on how to return the unit and arrange for a new unit.
Q: How difficult is SafeTRAC to install? A: Installing SafeTRAC is quite simple and can typically be accomplished in a matter of minutes. SafeTRAC installation requires no special training or tools. Installation primarily consists of mounting the camera and connecting the signal wires. Since the unit is self-calibrating the camera doesn’t require any special alignment, other than to be as close to center as possible and approximately level (see user manual for more detailed mounting instructions and recommendations). The only wiring is to optionally provide a signal from the turn signal and brake to the unit. It is very similar to connecting trailer wiring. View our online installation guide
Q: What if I don’t want to connect to my turn signal / brake? A: While we recommend connecting to the turn signal / brake lines for best performance, the unit operates still functions without them. The turn signal is used to tell if a change between lanes is intentional. If it is not connected, you have the option of suppressing all warnings when crossing a dashed line. It will still warn if you begin to cross a solid boundary.
Q: What types of vehicles does SafeTRAC work with? A: SafeTRAC is compatible with any vehicle. When installing the unit for the first time, it will ask what type of vehicle you are driving (i.e. sedan, minivan, SUV, pickup, RV, Aero Cab, Longnose, Cab-over). You also have the option of entering Custom and the system will ask you for the width of your vehicle and the height of the camera. We recommend entering custom parameters for vehicles that may be smaller or larger than typical for the class. Entering custom settings is also recommended to achieve the highest accuracy performance.
Q: How do I switch the unit between vehicles? A: Simply unplug SafeTRAC and reinstall it in the new vehicle. If the vehicle is the same type (i.e. switching from one Aero Cab to another), simply hold down the control knob to force the unit to recalibrate itself. If you are switching from an Aero Cab to a pickup, hold down the control knob while turning the system on. This resets all parameters and will require you to re-enter your vehicle type. Once your enter your new type the system will automatically re-calibrate itself. If you anticipate switching a SafeTRAC unit between vehicles frequently, we recommend purchasing additional cameras and leaving one installed in each vehicle.
Q: Can I prevent an operator from changing settings? A: A supervisor has the option of providing the operator with full access to system settings (volume, sensitivity, drowsy alert levels, etc.); limited access to certain settings only (i.e. only volume); or no access. The system can also be configured so that it cannot be turned off by the driver.
